Actor-director Suneel Puranik was honored with the prestigious National Award for his documentary film "Ranga Vaibhoga" (2022) on Tuesday evening. The film explores the tradition of temple dance in Karnataka and won in the Best Arts/Culture Film category. This achievement marks the third National Award for the Puranik family, following Suneel's son, Sagar Puranik, who was recognized for "Mahaan Hutatma" (Special Mention Award) in 2019 and "Dollu" (Best Feature Film in Kannada) in 2022. Notably, "Ranga Vaibhoga" holds special significance as it is a collaborative project between the father-son duo. Suneel directed the film, while Sagar served as the producer. Reflecting on the recognition, Sagar expressed, "I am thrilled that the award has come home, but it may take some time to fully sink in." Suneel, with 37 years in the industry, emphasized his focus on documenting fading traditions and preserving them for future generations rather than seeking awards. The duo discussed their passion for showcasing culture in their work, citing their deep-rooted cultural upbringing in north Karnataka as a driving force behind their film choices like "Dollu," "Ranga Vaibhoga," and their upcoming project, "Venkya." Sagar highlighted the importance of presenting unique and fresh perspectives on Indian culture through their films, inspired by their desire to share the rich heritage of their region with a broader audience."We aim to deliver the project with a foundation rooted in culture," expresses Sagar. The main hurdle lies in securing investment for such films, not necessarily focusing on profits, but rather on breaking even. Another challenge is connecting with technicians who share a similar mindset.
Sagar Puranik reflects on the contrasting approaches and thoughts that he and his father have when working together on a project. Despite their differences, they strive to collaborate harmoniously, acknowledging that their shared goal is for the success of the project. Understanding each other's strengths and weaknesses allows them to effectively complement each other during collaborations. They maintain a clear division of responsibilities on set and provide unwavering support for each other.
Following the announcement of the award, Suneel Puranik experienced a heartwarming moment during his routine morning walks as numerous individuals came forward to congratulate him. This recognition felt truly special, almost equivalent to receiving an award.
